BOMA approves July Sales Tax Holiday signage

Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a resolution allowing businesses to put up signs for promotions during the Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday without it counting as one of the four allowed special events a business can have.

Farragut Business Alliance requested the 10-day period before and including Sales Tax Holiday as a Shop Farragut promotional time (from July 22 through July 31), similar to the Shop Farragut program between the Saturday before Thanksgiv-ing and Dec. 31. The actual Sales Tax Holiday runs from July 29 through July 31.

FBA received no additional funding at this meeting, held Thursday, June 23, in Town Hall.

“We just got our funding two weeks ago, and we’re still trying to lay out what Shop Farragut’s going to look like,” Allison Sousa, FBA executive director, said after the meeting regarding other future Shop Farragut events. She said FBA would continue the winter holiday season Shop Farragut while doing additional promotions including retail center events.

BOMA approved a budget for Fiscal Year 2017.

BOMA also approved a resolution to establish and adopt internal controls, as required by the state of Tennessee. Internal controls are ways to account for funds, property and other assets and protect them against waste, loss, unauthorized use or misappropriation.

“You can’t just have one person that’s in charge of all the money. You have to have checks and balances,” Allison Myers, Town recorder and treasurer, said before the meeting.

BOMA also approved an event application for the fourth annual “Running for a Dream” 5K and 1-mile fun run Saturday, Sept. 10. It will take place in The Cove at Turkey Creek and Sweetbriar subdivision and be sponsored by The Dream Connection.

Mark Shipley, Farragut Community Developement director, said last year Town staff received complaints about spray chalk pavement markings.

He said staff recommended using signage or personnel to direct runners. Dr. Mary Palmer, Dream Connection board of directors, said the organization would use large staked signs instead this year.

“It was my brilliant idea to use spray chalk,” she said.

BOMA also approved special event signage for News Sentinel Open golf tournament in August.

BOMA approved the rezoning of property west of Briarstone subdivision and across from Anchor Park on the north side of Turkey Creek Road to R-3, Small Lot Single-Family Residential zoning with the provisiont the developer limit the number of house lots on the property to 35.

Rural/Metro Fire Department Chief Jerry M. Harnish gave a presentation about an Insurance Service Office rating of 3 from Verisk Analytics. He said it might lead to premium reductions in homeowners’ insurance.
