Tax-Free Holiday July 29-31

Farragut parents and businesses can save money sooner with state of Tennessee’s annual Tax-Free Holiday.

The state’s Sales Tax holiday now will be a weekend earlier than before because of a law enacted this year, Kelly Nolan Cortesi, director of Communications for Ten-nessee Department of Revenue, said.

Tax-Free Holiday previously took place in August, but recent state legislation has changed that date. This year’s Tax-Free Holi-day will begin at 12:01 a.m., Friday, July 29, and end at 11:59 a.m., Sunday, July 31.

During that weekend, Tennessee’s shoppers can get a tax break on clothing, school supplies and some computers.

Tax-Free Holiday will continue to take place the last Friday in July through the following Sunday.

“It’s a great opportunity to save money,” Cortesi said.

Tennessee General Assembly passed Public Chapter 396 of Tennessee Code Annotated Section 67-6-393, which established the Sales Tax holiday in August 2006. While the date changed, the new law did not alter any other holiday aspect.

Shoppers can save nearly 10 percent on eligible items.

Parents and other individuals can visit online at tntaxholiday.com to find out what items will be tax-free.

“[The website] will have all the tax-free eligible items, and it will answer frequently asked questions,” she said.

According to the website, clothing with a price of $100 or less per item, school and art supplies with a price of $100 or less per item, computers with a price of $1,500 or less per item are all eligible. Clothing includes shirts, dresses, pants, coats, gloves, mittens, hats, caps, hosiery, neckties, belts, sneakers, shoes, uniforms, athletic or non-athletic wear.

Eligible school supplies include binders, book bags, calculators, tape, chalk, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, pens, pencils, lunch boxes, notebooks, paper, rulers and scissors.

Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved Farragut Business Alliance’s request for a resolution during its June 23 meeting to allow businesses to put up signs for promotions for its 10-day Back-to-School Mini Blitz, which encompasses Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday.

Businesses wanting to participate must register with FBA before Friday, July 15.
