Hawks hold their own at Early Bird
With “several juniors and seniors” to lead the way according to head coach Mitzi McCurry, Hardin Valley Academy volleyball held its own in two games against two-time defending Class AAA state champion Brentwood.
This first-round Gold Bracket elimination game, with Gold the strongest bracket during 2016 Early Bird Tournament, saw the powerful Bruins eliminate HVA, 25-18 and 25-17 at Knoxville Christian School Saturday afternoon, Aug. 20.
With Hardin Valley led in part by senior captains Carol Waite, setter, and Katie Filipkowski, libero, “I think my girls did well. Brentwood is a powerhouse and they have a long history and a long heritage,” McCurry said.
The Lady Hawks entered the week 5-3 while beating Hendersonville, Hume-Fogg, Wal-ker Valley, Sullivan South and Knoxville Catholic during Early Bird play, which began Friday evening, Aug. 19, and included four other sites. Hardin Valley’s other Early Bird loss came in pool play versus Blessed Trinity.
“We’re trying to build a tradition right now of winning,” McCurry added. “… For the most part we’re an older team.”
