HVA hoops teams swept
POWELL —- Hardin Valley Academy girls basketball head coach Jennifer Galloway is hoping her squad won’t need any extra motivation to prepare for this week’s District 4-AAA Tournament.
But if the Lady Hawks need a wakeup call they certainly got it Friday night, Feb. 10, dropping a 48-45 decision at Powell on PHS Senior Night “Powell is a good team. We played them earlier and they’re a much-improved team,” Galloway said. “But I think we’re better too. They played up to their potential tonight and we didn’t.”
Powell improved its overall record to 19-8 after the win.
The Lady Hawks (20-7) were led by junior post Abbey Cornelius, recently named 4-AAA Player of the Year, with 19 points.
Meanwhile, the third time wasn’t quite the charm for the HVA boys. The Hawks closed out the regular-season (14-13) with a 64-52 loss at Powell.
It was HVA’s third setback to the Panthers (18-9) this season, as Hardin Valley lost despite opening a 20-11 lead. “We came out and started fast and the guys were playing well. ... But we got too comfortable and we backed off for some reason,” Hawks senior David Henson said.
Tristen Waite led HVA with 13 points. Aaron Dykes added 10.
