Ex-FHS stars Thomas, Johnson transfer to Tennessee Vols golf

University of Tennessee men’s golf coach Brennan Webb announced Wednesday, Aug. 1, the addition of two former Farragut Admirals who are transferring to his Vols program.

Former Admirals standouts Tyler Johnson, who just completed his redshirt freshman season, and Chip Thomas, who just completed his sophomore season, played key roles in helping Middle Tennessee State advance to the NCAA Regionals in 2018, as they both played in all 12 events for the Blue Raiders.

“We are incredibly fortunate to be able to add two players of the level of Tyler and Chip,” Webb said. “They will be a tremendous asset to our program on and off the golf course. I know they are excited to return home to Knoxville and continue their college careers as Vols.”

Johnson, a former All-State and All-Region 2-AAA golfer as an FHS Admiral, was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year
last season and voted Second Team All-C-USA.

Thomas was voted to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2017 while also earning C-USA Golfer of the Week honors twice that season. He took co-medalist honors last season at the MTSU Intercollegiate with rounds of 71 and 69.

Thomas finished third on the team in stroke average (72.4) in 35 rounds, and placed inside the top 25 six times, including a top 10 finish at Bearcat Invitational.
