Brewer the ‘manufacturer’ lifts Bearden past HVA
Bearden’s Alex Smith, middle, battles Hardin Valley Academy’s Karris Anastasio (6) and Lauryn Smith (8) for ball possession.
KNOXVILLE — As Ryan Radcliffe and the Bearden Lady Bulldogs soccer team entered the 2018 season, they were wondering who might step up and be a consistent scorer.Radcliffe may have found one clutch sniper in junior forward Abby Brewer. A three-year starter, Brewer’s two goals led the Lady Bulldogs (1-0) to a 2-0 victory over longtime rival Hardin Valley Academy (0-1-1) Thursday, Aug. 16, at BHS’s Turner-Allender Field.
“Abby has been a starter for us since her freshman year and she’s been manufacturing goals for us since her freshman year,” Radcliffe said. “She’s going to be a leader for us this year.”
Brewer gave the home side a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.
“This was a good win for us,” said Brewer, who scored the second goal of the match off an assist from Emily Carlevato. “Especially since we lost to Powell in a scrimmage.
“... The heart wasn’t there. But the heart was there tonight.”
BHS senior netminder Maggie Jones “made some big saves for us,” Radcliffe said.
“It was just very apparent that we have some holes to fill and we’ll have to fix them real quick,” HVA first-year head coach Jessie Stephens said. “When you don’t play in a soft district, you have to be ready to play in every game.
“We only have three girls who played varsity soccer here last year.”
