Giving spirit fostered early at NES
Targeted donations for Guatemala
Dreama Feezell, first-grade teacher, said the classes collected more than 720 dental items — such as floss, toothpaste, toothbrushes and mouthwash — between March 25 and April 5, for children and
their families in Guatemala through the non-profit charity.
This was not Feezell’s first time holding the drive.
“In the past, I just kept this as my class to do it, but this year we included the entire first grade community,” Feezell said.
With a goal of just 100 items per class, she said, “We bypassed my goal by 475 items.
“To successfully collect over 720 items, that was huge,” she added. “Guatemala kids are very thankful and appreciative. There’s an organization that collects those items from me and takes care of getting them to the children.
“I just want to teach the children philanthropy, an opportunity that we are so well off in our own community to just have an opportunity to give back, and even though they are so young, what an impact they could make — even at being 6 and 7 years old. For a lot of them it was very eye-opening to think ‘I’m this age, but I just made this big of an impact in a different country.’”
According to a letter from Angela Grussing on the Nuestros Niños Charity website, the charity is an adoption support group. Started by families for Latin American adoption, it evolved over the years to help provide opportunities for “education, empowerment of women and meeting basic needs of food, shelter and clothing,” as well as “instilling a sense of service in a child to teach compassion, respect and the ability to make an impact on our world.”
