A Region II split for 4-AAA league champ FHS softball

Farragut High School softball head coach Nick Green was pleased with the way his team answered an early-morning wake-up call Saturday, April 27.

“I really like the way they responded after last night,” Green said after the Lady Admirals routed Grace Christian Academy 8-1 in the BSN Sports Region II Challenge at FHS’s Bellamy Field.

The Lady Ads (30-7) dropped a heartbreaker to The Kings Academy Friday night, April 26, at FHS.

The Lady Lions, a Division II-A powerhouse and two-time defending state champ, nabbed a 2-1 win despite getting just two hits.

The Lady Ads avoided a repeat performance, as FHS junior catcher Katie Tuggle made sure that didn’t happen in the top of the first inning verses GCA.

FHS, the visiting team, wasted little time jumping on the Lady Rams, which also looks to make a deep postseason run in Division II-A. Grace (21-7) has beaten King’s once this season.

Farragut’s initial rally started with a one-out single by Devon Weller. She stole second and swiped third. Lauren Brakovec walked with two outs. Both scored when Tuggle doubled to give the Lady Ads a 2-0 lead.

FHS would add another run when Vivian Boles, serving as a courtesy runner, scored on an RBI single by Kallie Overcash.

Farragut scored five of its runs against Grace with two outs.

Tuggle, who reached base in all three of her plate appearances as she walked twice, said Farragut needed to bounce back in its final tune-up before this week’s District 4-AAA Tournament.

“This was a big win for us going into the postseason,” she said.

Lady Ads freshman left-hander Avery Flatford hurled a no-hitter with nine strikeout despite four walks.

Farragut added two runs in the second thanks to an RBI single by Ace Strickland.

Farragut scored another as the Lady Rams committed two errors. Joely Gruhn reached and scored when Weller reached on a three-base error.

Overcash drove in the final run of the game, which was called after four innings due to tournament time limit. Her sacrifice fly plated Brakovec, who doubled to open the inning.
