Double ‘Aces,’ Young excel, yet FHS falls in substate
Three Farragut softball standouts peformed “Admirably,” looking to place FHS into the TSSAA Class AAA state tournament field with a Section 1-AAA victory Friday afternoon, May 17, at Region 1-AAA champ Jefferson County.
While freshman Avery “Ace” Strickland and sophomore Cameron Young combined for seven hits, senior staff pitching ace Lakyn Moore fired nine shutout innings, allowing just three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts.
But it wasn’t enough to beat the homestanding Lady Patriots (22-10 ), who used a hit batter and two 11th-inning walks to force home the winning run, 1-0, and head to Murfreesboro this week.
“We couldn’t get a big hit; I think we had 14 stranded runners,” said Lady Admirals skipper Nick Green, whose young team finished the season 34--9.
“We couldn’t put the ball in play with runners at third base and less than two outs. They didn’t even get a runner to third base until the 10th inning,” he added.
Meanwhile, “Lakyn’s pitching was outstanding,” Green said about the senior, who ended the season with a 20-4 record and an earned run average “less than 2.0.”
Joely Gruhn, senior outfielder, “made diving catches in the Halls game (3-2 region final loss) and the Jeff County game,” Green said, adding both seniors “have outstanding character.”
