Kitchens helps pets with mobility issues

Bill Kitchens, licensed certified orthotist who owns My Pet’s Brace, recently was on hand at Fido Fest in Turkey Creek.
When West Knox County resident Bill Kitchens saw he had a skill that could help pets “live happier lives,” he leapt at the chance.

Kitchens, licensed by the state and certified by American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics, operates a satellite office of My Pet’s Brace in Lovell Heights Shopping Center, 10420 Kingston Pike, where he provides custom ACL/CCL knee and leg braces and prosthetics for pets.

“It’s good to know that I’m here,” he said. “Ninety percent of the time I can help.”

Kitchens said the braces could help a dog walk comfortably, stop limping and bear weight on the injured leg.

“It promotes the natural healing process of scar tissue formation without surgery,” he said. “You dog can sit, lie down, take walks, play and even swim while wearing the brace.”

Kitchens said braces are built with the same materials used for human braces, which was his field of work for 27 years before opening My Pet’s Brace.

Then he met Jim Alaimo, co-founder of My Pet’s Brace in Pennsylvania.

“I visited him and I absolutely loved it,” he recalled. He changed directions in his career to open the first My Pet’s Brace satellite facility about a year ago.

Along with prosthetics, Kitchens makes carts and wheelchairs.

Kitchens said the evaluation, casting, fabrication of braces, fitting and follow-up are all included in the price.

His hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; Saturdays by appointment only; and closed Sundays.
