Renfree heads to ND with two more distance state titles

Jake Renfree finished his outstanding Knoxville Catholic High School distance-running career by sweeping first-place honors in the 800-meter run (1:53.80) and 1600 (4:14.3) during the TSSAA Large School Track & Field state meet Thursday evening, May 23, at Middle Tennessee State University.

The talented senior, a Notre Dame signee, provided 20 of the 25 Irish points for an eighth-place team finish.

Miguel Parrilla, Hardin Valley Academy senior, finished third in the 800 (1:56.34), helping the Hawks claim ninth place (24).

Hardin Valley’s 4 X 400 relay team captured second place (3:19.190) behind champion Memphis Central (3:17.99); Farragut was third, just .6 of a second behind HVA (3:19.252).

The Admirals’ 4 X 800 relay team finished third (8:09.18) followed by Bearden in fourth and the Hawks in sixth.

John Rentenbach, KCHS senior, claimed fourth in pole vault.

Luke Filipkowski, HVA junior, took fifth in shot put.

Top girls finishes

On the girls’ side, Hardin Valley’s 4 X 200 relay team captured second place (1:41.62), as the Lady Hawks finished 17th (16 points) as a team.

Eleanor Mancini, Lady Irish junior, finished second in 800 run (2:15.61), helping Catholic claim 18th as a team (15); Kensi Gray, HVA senior, was fourth.

Catholic’s 4 X 400 relay team claimed fourth.

Farragut 4 X 800 relay team placed fifth.

Other Large School boys results:

• Kaden Keller, HVA freshman, seventh in 3200 run.

• Michael Spurgeon, HVA sophomore, eighth in 110 hurdles.

• Kelton Gunn, HVA junior, ninth in 400 run; FHS junior Scott Grunau was 14th.

• Nicklaus Iverson, Catholic sophomore, 14th in 100-dash.

• Riley Smith, KCHS sophomore, 14th in 1600 run; Preston Ruth, Bearden senior, was 16th.

• Farragut’s 4 X 100 relay foursome finished 15th.

Other Girls results:

• Callie Tucker, Catholic junior, was seventh in 3200 run.

• Dominique Romain, HVA sophomore, eighth in 100 dash; she also finished 13th in 200 dash.

• Brooke Taylor, HVA freshman, 10th in long jump.

• Sidney Wallace, Lady Hawks junior, 10th in triple jump; Wallace also finished 12th in 110 hurdles.

• Megan Armstrong, Bearden junior, 10th in shot put.

• Anna Witsoe, KCHS junior, 11th in 400 dash.

• The Lady Hawks 4 X 100 relay team also qualified for state.
