Town Community Center renting, setting programs as ‘soft opening’ began this week

The new Farragut Community Center opened Monday, Feb. 3, and is looking at several weeks of a “soft-opening” while staffers settle in and new employees are trained.

The Center, on the top floor of the former Faith Lutheran Church at 239 Jamestowne Blvd., currently is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, plus some nights and Saturdays in February during which time citizens may tour the facility and apply for membership cards, which are free of charge.

Check Farragutparks&rec.org for exact days and times.

On Monday, March, 2 the center will begin its regular hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday thru Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re inviting people to stop by to create a free membership card,” said Wendy Smith, Town public relations and marketing coordinator. “We are requiring users to have membership cards for insurance purposes and to keep track of who is in the building.”

Residents also may begin reserving the classrooms, the gymnasium, and the Assembly Hall, and are encouraged to visit the Park and Recreation Department’s new website, www.farragutparksandrec.org, to create and account and reserve the available spaces.

Additionally, two key programs would be offered later in the month: its first-ever Photography Show, sponsored by the Town Arts & Beautification Committee, on Feb. 21 and 22, then the following weekend, Visit Farragut will host its second annual Songwriter’s Showcase event, Songwriter’s in the Round, on Saturday, Feb. 29.

The photography show — which has extended its registration deadline to Friday, Feb. 14 — is “intended to showcase exceptional work produced by amateur photographers in our region,” according to information from Arts & Beautification Committee.

The Songwriters Showcase — Songwriters in the Round takes place during Tennessee Songwriter’s Week. It will feature local and regional singer/songwriters Dave Landeo, Jason Ellis and J. Luke. Individual tickets, currently available through the Visit Farragut website, are $7.50 or tables of 10 can be purchased for $65 plus processing fees. Water into Wine will be providing a cash bar for the evening and light table snacks will be available.

“We’re very excited to embark on this new adventure of hosting programs and events in this beautiful space,” Town Public Relations Coordinator Wendy Smith said. “We’ve been anticipating this for a long time and can hardly believe it’s really happening.

“The Photography Show will be fun because it’s a brand new event and we think the community will stop by to check out the Community Center as well as the photography.

“The Songwriters Showcase will be different this year because the audience will be better able to hear and enjoy the music in our Assembly Hall. Plus, food and beverages will be available for purchase, which will be a first for an event held at a Town property.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun!”

A full slate of activities will be available beginning in March, including 15th Annual Shamrock Ball Saturday, March 7, and inaugural Farragut Health and Wellness Expo Saturday, March 28.
