ENGLEWOOD-JOHNSON CITY — A last-minute schedule change — due to, yes, COVID-19 — sent the unbeaten Farragut Lady Admirals basketball team about 60 miles southwest, instead of roughly 120 miles northeast Friday, Dec. 11.

Scheduled to play two games in Tennessee Roundball Classic in Johnson City, a last-minute cancellation left Jason Mayfield’s girls searching: an option came open to head in the opposite direction and play at Class AA perennial power McMinn Central.

Building a 15-2 lead and keeping control until a Chargerettes’ run cut the lead to four early in the fourth quarter, Farragut managed to hold on for a 68-61 victory.

“McMinn Central is a really good basketball team, and they obviously have a good program,” Mayfield said.

“Macy Barnes and Ashlyn Sheridan kind of started us off well down there,” he added, as Barnes, a senior guard, scored a game-high 21 points and dished out three assists. Sheridan, a junior guard, added 17 points and six rebounds.

Avery “Ace” Strickland, junior guard, had 15 points while Keeleigh Rogers, yet another junior guard, dished out 10 assists and grabbed seven steals to go with four points.

Going to Johnson City Saturday, Dec. 12, the Lady Admirals improved to a perfect 7-0 overall, while still 2-0 in District 4-AAA, after crushing the host Lady Hilltoppers 70-43.

Strickland led in scoring with 19 while also grabbing seven rebounds. Barnes scored 16 followed by Sheridan’s 14 points and eight rebounds. McCall Willis, junior post, added nine points and eight rebounds.

“They’re a little down — and they were missing one key player,” Mayfield said about the Lady Hilltoppers.

A Knox County Schools-imposed mandatory break until Tuesday, Jan. 5, results in a rescheduled game at 4-AAA rival William Blount Jan. 5 (originally scheduled Tuesday, Dec. 15).
