Though young, few in numbers, FHS wrestling sweeps
Beating the CHS Hornets 27-24, Admirals freshman Pierce Broadhurst and senior Isabella Snyder helped their team with dominant victories.
Snyder, in the 132-pound class, pinned Carter’s Kaitlyn Loy in the first period, needing just 41 seconds.
“She’d been putting in a lot of work over the summer,” said David Garabrandt, first-year Admirals head coach and a former FHS assistant.
Broadhurst, at 106, needed the full 6 minutes of regulation, but blanked Hornet Aiden Loy 7-0.
“He’s one of the guys I’m really excited for,” Garabrandt said. “He shows a lot of excitement towards the sport.
“He’s had a few injuries, but he’s willing to work through it,” the coach added. “And he’s a very quick learner, especially for it being his first year.”
Also defeating Fulton earlier in the season, Farragut’s duals record stands at 3-3 overall.
Despite youth and small team numbers, “They are learning a lot faster than we’ve been in the last couple of years,” Garabrandt said. “I’m not exactly sure what we changed, but we’re doing something right.
“And it’s exciting to see.”
Against Karns in a 33-24 Farragut victory, senior Zach Garabrandt — Region 3-AAA champ at 138 last season — scored a third-period pin in the 145-pound class.
Teammate Talon Pritchard, a sophomore at 160, followed up with a hard-fought 16-12 win — rallying from a 7-4 deficit after one period.
Eli Gentry, a freshman at 220, scored a first-period pin versus Karns.
Freshman Connor Lyons also scored a first period pin for the Admirals — his at 126.
Not wrestling Friday was Corey Walker, FHS junior heavyweight and region runner-up last season.
He is expected back when FHS resumes meets in early January.
