Despite Barnes’ 22, Willis’ boards, FHS season over
OAK RIDGE — Farragut’s late second-quarter surge carried over into the third quarter, led by the perimeter scoring of senior wing Macy Barnes, the rebounding of junior post McCall Willis and a defensive change.
Though erasing a 12-point Oak Ridge second quarter edge with an 11-2 run to briefly lead 40-38, then 44-43 a bit later, the Lady Admirals didn’t quite have enough steam at the end despite being tied 54-54 after a Barnes three-pointer with 5:12 left in regulation.
A late Lady Wildcats late surge resulted in a 67-58 ORHS win at home Friday night, Feb. 26, in the Region 2-AAA quarterfinals. Farragut’s season ends with an 18-8 record.
“We knew we had to change defenses to a 2-3 (zone) because we were struggling in the first half,” said Barnes, who scored 22 points for No. 4 seed FHS.
Willis ended with 16 rebounds to go with 10 points.
While unhappy with turnovers, FHS head coach Jason Mayfield added, “Macy Barnes was fantastic offensively tonight, and McCall Willis was fantastic with rebounding.”
Khamaei Mitchell-Steen, Oak Ridge Miss Basketball Finalist as a star guard, led the District 3-AAA top-seeded Lady ’Cats with a game-high 25 points.
