Farragut schools look to honor, reward its teachers, school nurses during May

Teachers and school nurses — all of whom have bravely faced a tough pandemic year — will be honored by the Farragut community in the coming weeks.

The national Parent Teacher Association is promoting its annual Teacher Appreciation Week this year (Monday through Friday, May 3-7), although Farragut Intermediate School will be celebrating the occasion during the last full week of school, May 17-21, at principal Deborah Adorante’s request to “avoid the testing window,” said Elizabeth Munk, FIS Parent Teacher Association president.

Many activities and events are being planned to support and thank Farragut teachers.

Farragut Primary School recently held an online auction fun-raiser specifically to “love on our teachers,” said Michelle Morrow, FPS Parent Teacher Association president, during a recent Town Education Relations Committee meeting.

“Our goal is to make Teacher Appreciation Week something they won’t forget,” she added.

An FPS flier promoting the week’s events suggests: Monday, May 3, bring a teacher his or her favorite flower; on Tuesday, May 4, bring a teacher a note explaining his or her impact over the last year; Wednesday, May 5, bring school supplies that might be running low; Thursday, May 6, bring a teacher a treat or a favorite snack, beverage or homemade treat; then on Friday, May 7, bring teachers gift cards to their favorite restaurant or store.

“We welcome anyone else who would like to contribute, to let us know if they would like to make a donation or sponsor a particular teacher or staff,” said Beth Duncan, Farragut Middle School Parent Teacher Organization president.

Later in the month, National School Nurse Day will be celebrated May 12, and Duncan said all four school nurses will be honored and recognized for “going above and beyond” during the current school year. “Our nurses have been asked to do far more this year than any other year before. We feel that celebrating them on May 12 is the least that we can do.”
