Smelling top seed, 9-1 in District 4-4A, Ads eye tourney

Looking to secure its first district league championship in a few years, Farragut boys basketball took an 8-1 District 4-4A record (19-6 overall) into its final 4-4A game of the regular season as it hosted William Blount in Lynn E. Sexton Gymnasium Tuesday night, Feb. 8 (after deadline).

An easy victory at Heritage Friday night, Feb. 4, was the latest Admirals conquest entering this week, as Farragut looks for the top seed in next week’s district tourney — also at Heritage.

Chief among many Admirals who have contributed to this season’s success is senior guard Dillon Atwell, who recently surpassed the career 1,000-point mark in scoring (see photo on page 2B).

A four-year starter whose career point total would be much higher if not for lengthy injuries as a underclassmen, Farragut head coach Jon Higgins said it was “a great achievement for a great young man. Works hard and is a great teammate.”

The Admirals were tied with rival Bearden, also with an 8-1 district record — but Farragut won the tiebreaker based on a preseason draw of numbers.

William Blount stood at 5-4 in 4-4A starting the week, followed by HVA at 5-4, Maryville 2-7 and Heritage 0-9.
