State runner-up Irish
Hutchens era ends at 625-272 in 33 years
COOKEVILLE — On one hand, the future looks bright for Knoxville Catholic boys basketball, as punctuated by junior wing Blue Cain’s game-high 31 points against Christian Brothers in the TSSAA Division II-AA state championship game at Tennessee Tech Saturday, March 5.
The unbeaten Purple Wave (28-0) proved tough to handle with its dribble penetration, ending with a huge edge in “points in the paint,” as the Memphians fought off a late KCHS rally to win the crown 79-72. Catholic ends 29-4.
Also tough to handle is the loss of three key components to the Irish three-year run of huge success — in one case, a 33-year run of huge success.
Playing their final games in green and gold were star point guard B.J. Edwards, a Tennessee Vols signee, and sharpshooting wing Presley Patterson.
Meanwhile, the 33-year reign of Irish head coach Mike Hutchens ends with a 625-272 career mark at KCHS with a 2020 state championship and numerous strong state tourney finishes.
Looking back, “It’s been a heck of a run,” Hutchens said recently about his 33 years. “Most people don’t get to do a job that’s fun, and I’ve got to do one for 33 years. It’s almost like I didn’t work.
“Every player I’ve ever had I’ve enjoyed,” he added, which included his son, Mikey Hutchens (2002-2006).
“Coach (Tony) Scott has been with me for 21 years. Little Tony (Scott’s son) is my Godson,” he said. “And Jurard (Scott) played for me. ...”
