Despite 1-3 record, Roach ‘confident’ in his Hawks based on schedule
Hardin Valley Academy baseball kicked off the 2022 season at The Grand Slam Classic in Nashville starting Monday, March 14.
The Hawks won only one of their four games, but heach coach Tyler Roach came away feeling good about his squad.
“Obviously you wanna go 4-0, but I leave that week maybe more confident than I’ve ever been since I’ve been here,” Roach said. “Those are some of the best teams in the state, and it showed me we can beat these teams or be right there with them even when we’re not playing our best game.”
Hardin Valley lost its first game 1-0 to Green Hill High School from Mt. Juliet Monday. Logan Ozias went five innings and gave up the one hit.
On Tuesday, March 15, HVA lost 4-2 to Independence High, the eighth-ranked team in Tennessee. Adam Baker went five Innings for the Hawks and had 10 strikeouts. Two of Indy’s runs were unearned.
The Hawks played two on Thursday, picking up their win in the first game, 8-2 over Mt. Juliet High School. The Golden Bears currently are ninth in the state. Austin King hit a two-run home run for the Hawks; Ty Denton, Ozias and Austin Bolding each had two hits. Bolding had two RBI. Connor O’Donnell pitched a complete game and struck out nine.
An 8-4 loss to Murfreesboro Oakland closed things out, though HVA out-hit Oakland. Denton had a pair of hits and Ozias had an RBI single.
Micah Hoffmeister pitched four innings with no walks or earned runs. “He threw well enough to win,” Roach said.
