‘One of the toughness,’ plus leadership, stats top qualities of state champ signee Brewer

Coach Matt Buckner reminded a gathering of Garrett Brewer’s family, friends, teammates and coaches about his former catcher’s toughness, leadership and impressive stats in helping lead the Farragut High School baseball team to the TSSAA Division I-4A state championship in late May. “He played the Sectional game, and then four games in the state tournament with a fully torn hamstring — off the bone. … He’s one of the toughest kids I’ve ever met,” said Buckner, (standing third from left), Admirals baseball skipper since 2010 who has led five Farragut teams to state titles. He praised Brewer (red shirt) during a brief ceremony where the recent FHS graduate signed with Roane State Community College in the school’s Commons Wednesday afternoon, June 29. “… With a really young team, he was the leader we needed. He was the backbone of our team; just an awesome kid. He hit .400 this year with three home runs … caught all the games in the playoffs.”

Seated alongside Brewer are his brother, Gavin Brewer, FHS rising junior, and their parents, Angie and Kenneth Brewer. Standing alongside Buckner, from left, are FHS athletic director Donald Dodgen, principal Dr. John Bartlett and baseball assistant coaches Garrett Copeland, Danny Sharp and Bill Mink.
