Catholic volleyball ends third in state

MURFREESBORO — So close to earning a state championship match appearance last week, Knoxville Catholic finished with a 1-2 record during the four-team Division II-AA State Volleyball Tournament Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 18-20, earning the Lady Irish a No. 3 state finish.

Losing in four games to eventual state champ Briarcrest (34-6) in the opening round Oct. 18, KCHS (27-13) stayed alive in the tournament by blanking Ensworth (17-16) in straight games 25-23, 26-24 and 25-15 later that day.

Squaring off against Baylor (35-8) Oct. 19, with the winner advancing to the title match Oct. 20, the Lady Irish rallied from being down two games to tie the match (28-26, 25-15, 15-25, 13-25), but lost the deciding game by a razor-thin margin, 16-14.
