Morelan’s 239 helps lead HVA to its first victory

MARYVILLE — With the team’s standout senior running back going wild on the ground, plus many other players who stepped up big-time, Jeff Miner enjoyed his first football head coaching victory at Hardin Valley Academy Friday night, Oct. 21.

As it was late in 2021 at HVA, the Hawks broke their winless drought against William Blount, basically dominating the Governors (0-9) at WBHS and coming away with a 42-25 win.

Senior Tayvon Morelan’s 239 yards rushing and three touchdowns was clearly the highlight — one of those scores came from 54 yards.

“We did a phenomenal job on offense tonight,” Miner said. “They really came out and did a great job blocking. We did a great job running the football. We made good decisions, we didn’t turn it over.

“I’m just proud of these guys,” he added. “A lot of adversity, but they’ve never quit, they’ve never stopped showing up — even for fall break, they kept showing up, they kept fighting, they kept believing.

“I’m just happy for them, that they get to experience this.”

“We came out and executed and we came out with a ‘W,’” Morelan said.

“The offensive line blocked well, and the ends and the wide receivers; and that’s why I did what I did today,” he added. “This is the first win we’ve had in a long time, and it means a lot.”

Luca Moro was among the Hawks who highlighted the defense, intercepting two passes.

“It feels great to finally get one. We worked really hard over the summer and throughout the season,” Moro, a senior defensive back, said. “We’ve gotten better throughout the weeks. It was difficult to go through a lot of those games — we were in a lot of them. The strides that we made from Week One and every single week after, it was tough.”

“It feels really good to finally turn the corner; we’ve been working really hard all season,” said senior linebacker Isaac Hillis, one of the team’s leading tacklers. “We really came into this game with a lot of confidence.”

Senior quarterback Caleb Smith scored twice on short scampers, while Austin Rome added some big runs.

Senior quarterback Hayden Bryant found receiver Kaden Cutcher with the last Hawks touchdown.

Linebacker Tommy Joseph grabbed a late interception.
