Art a win for Joyce

Farragut Primary School first-grader Joyce Hu’s art won a state-level award.

Joyce won third place in her grade level in the State of Tennessee’s Art Review and Showcase competition earlier this school year, and is among only 19 students selected.

Collectively, the winning students’ works — the top three of each grade level and Best of Show — will hang in Tennessee State Museum in Nashville through May.

FPS art teacher Ruth Granroth submitted Joyce’s piece for the competition, and was only allowed to nominate one piece of art per grade.

“All of her art is very well-done,” Granroth said.

“She really has an eye for depth and detail.”

She was honored during the FPS announcements Wednesday, Jan. 18, and was presented with a copy of her winning piece, which she was able to take home, along with a second copy, which will be hung at the school.

Joyce, the daughter of Jicun Hu and Cuicui Wang, attended a celebratory reception and commemoration Saturday, Jan. 21, at Tennessee State Museum.

Two other Knox County students also won third place in their grade levels: third-grader Leah Powers of Powell Elementary and fourth-grader Avery Quilty of Pleasant Ridge Elementary.

The event was sponsored by Tennessee Art Education Association.
