Hawks clip Collierville, go 1-1; BHS falls 1-0 to #1 Brentwood
MURFREESBORO — The local boys soccer state tourney highlight was Hardin Valley Academy getting a goal from DJ Powers, assisted by Brady Hammer, in the 75th minute to edge Collierville (15-4-2 record) 3-2 in the opening round of the Division I-AAA quarterfinals at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex Tuesday, May 23.
Other HVA goals came from Ish Palacios (21st minute/Ben Brophy assist) and Nathan Holbrook (29th minute/Hammer assist).
The Hawks finished the season 13-4-6 after being blanked by Station Camp, eventual runner-up, 4-0 in the semifinals Wednesday, May 24.
Meanwhile, undefeated power Bearden (18-0-3) faced off against powerful Brentwood, undefeated defending state champ (22-0), in the opening round May 23. The Bruins got a goal in the 20th minute and held the Dawgs scoreless — despite being out-shot 18-7 — in a 1-0 win.
Brentwood, beating BHS in last year’s AAA title game, went on to repeat as No. 1 (25-0).
