Farragut welcomes Acuity Hearing Centers
Amber Simpson, hearing instrument specialist, and her stepdaughter Regan Simpson, patient care coordinator, are heading the office, which is sharing space with Knox Wellness and Massage at 11410 Kingston Pike, Suite 400.
Acuity Hearing Centers’ Farragut office, owned by Amber’s husband, Joe Simpson, Stacy O’Brian, Randy Schoenborn and Cade Simpson, opened in May. It is one of three centers in East Tennessee, which also include Johnson City and Kingsport.
However, “the owners are part of a healthcare group that have other centers in Florida and Oklahoma,” Amber said.
“When a patient comes in, first we do video otoscopy,” she added. “We take a tiny camera and look in your ear and it broadcasts it on a television in front of you so you can see your canal and your eardrum along with me.
“We do light wax removal from the ear. And then, we take you through a full audiological evaluation, which consists of word tests, air and bone conduction, and that will help us determine whether or not a patient is a candidate for a hearing aid or not.”
If a patient is a candidate, “then we talk about what their options are to get treatment and to move forward with help,” Amber said, adding Acuity also provides hearing aids at the office.
“We fit the hearing aids and program them,” she added. “We also can do custom ear protection, (such as) custom swimmer’s plugs — and we actually can make devices that are custom hunting devices.
“Primarily, we work with hearing aids.”
The Simpsons became involved in the hearing business after “my husband was born with hearing loss, (but) it wasn’t discovered until he was 9,” Amber said. “When they discovered the hearing loss, he was a hearing aid wearer.
“His dad worked with hearing aids, and that’s what encouraged my husband to do it,” she added.
Before the two formally met, “I actually was in a restaurant and heard what he did,” said Amber, who has been a hearing specialist since 2008. “I was a graduate from ETSU with a graphic design degree.”
“We started dating a little while after that,” she added, also noting they married eight years ago. “He trained me to be a hearing specialist.”
The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
