‘Max’ has itchy ears: what’s up?
Q: My cat, “Max,” has been scratching his ears for almost a week, but I cannot see anything wrong. What could be causing this, and how can I help him? R.K., Farragut
A: If Max has been itchy for a week, it’s time to see your veterinarian. He/she will examine his ears with otoscope, an instrument that will allow your veterinarian to see the entire ear canal, including the deeper portions that you are unable to see.
If there is a discharge present, your veterinarian will likely remove some of it and examine it under a microscope. Cats (and dogs) can get ear mites, a contagious parasitic infection that is quite itchy. Your veterinarian will also check for bacteria and yeast, as these types of infections could make Max uncomfortable.
Your veterinarian will also examine the pinna (ear flap) and surrounding area to rule out other issues. Once the source of Max’s discomfort is identified and treatment initiated, you’ll be able to help Max feel better. I hope he feels better soon.
