• At 12:21 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20, a victim called Knox County Sheriff’s Office to report financial exploitation of the elderly, which occurred at a Clover Fork Drive residence. According to the victim, between 4:30 and 9:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, “he was scammed out of approximately $4,000 on a Paypal scam,” the report stated.
Victim advised his wife received an alert from Paypal about possible fraud on her account. He said they looked at the account and there were two attempted transactions totaling $1,500 they didn’t make. The victim advised both transactions were denied by Paypal.
“According to the victim, he googled Paypal to get their number so he could check on these fraudulent transactions,” the report further stated. “The victim said he thought the number he was calling was the Fraud department at Paypal. He said a male with a foreign accent answered the phone ‘Fraud Department” and identified himself as Richard.”
According to the victim, the suspect told him in order to clear things up on the account he needed to setup an American Express Send Account, in which the victim put $4,000. He said the money was then put into an account under the name Maria … who was supposedly his manager. The victim stated the male suspect told him the money would be put back on his American Express account. According to the victim, he became suspicious after doing all these things and hung up on the suspect.
• At 6:33 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, a complainant called KCSO Teleserve Unit to report a burglary to her 2016 Nissan Rogue at a Coach Road address. She said an unknown suspect stole items from the vehicle. There was no damage to the vehicle, as the doors were left unlocked as she picked up her son from school. She advised the stolen insurance cards were hers and her sons, and she froze her credit card. Total value of loss was listed at $53.
• At 4:29 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17, a complainant called KCSO Teleserve Unit to report his 2012 Horda Accord burglarized at a Union Camp Lane residence. Complainant advised the vehicle was unlocked. There were no signs of forced entry. Total value of loss was listed at $200.
• At 4:15 p.m., Oct. 17, a complainant called KCSO Teleserve Unit to report a swindle from Hurricane Cycles, 138 West End Ave. He reported that on Sept. 2 his business sold a 2023 tan Giant Glory bike for $8,740, “but the charge was declined due to the credit card used being reported as stolen,” the report stated. “The purchase was made online ... . He was advised a report must be made to be reimbursed for the purchase.”
• At 1:32 p.m., Oct. 17, a complainant called KCSO West Precinct to report forgery of a check at Skyline Logistics, Inc. Complainant advised while looking through his online banking account on Oct. 17, “he noticed a check was cleared on Oct. 16 in the amount of $22,000 that was fraudulently made out to the suspect,” the report stated.
• At 8:43 a.m., Monday, Oct. 16, a victim called KCSO to file a report regarding a theft, which occurred while receiving service at a Farragut area business. According to the victim, he was at the business between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13. “The victim advised his truck, a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, is one of 500 Chevy Silveradoes with the Callaway Special Edition Package,” the report stated. “He said Chevrolet sends the Silveradoes to Callaway Rocky Ridge, where they replace the engine with a more powerful one and upgrade the suspension and some other parts. The victim advised there is separate Callaway VIN plate riveted to the plastic cowling underneath the hood.
“He said it was on there before he went to (the business) and discovered it missing on Saturday (Oct. 14),” the report further stated. “The victim stated he hadn’t been anywhere else with the truck. He advised he knew the workers had the hood up on his truck while there.
“According to the victim, this Callaway VIN plate is very important. The victim said without this plate, the value of the truck would drop by $12,000 to $15,000. He said if the vehicle is damaged or needs a part replaced, you have to have the VIN Plate number in order to get any replacement parts.”
