Stepping up with a top player missing, Lady Ads’ steady play takes out WBHS
Led by KJ McNealy, sophomore wing/forward who scored a team-high 18 points, Jaci Neubert, junior guard who added 14, and Lilly Mullins, sophomore guard whose 10 points including three consecutive baskets early in the fourth quarter, FHS (7-5 staring the week) grabbed a 52-42 victory.
“William Blount’s been playing well at home, especially this year,” said FHS head coach Jason Mayfield, missing Priest due to a foot/ankle injury. “It’s the first district game, it’s on the road, so we knew we needed to come out and everybody had to step up their game up without Annie.
“I feel like we did a pretty good job,” he added. “KJ did a really good job of doing just everything. When Annie is out like that, we asked KJ to do a lot.”
About being asked to help lead the team in scoring, “It’s definitely something I’ve gotten used to, especially since last year,” McNealy said. “I definitely think I welcome it more.”
“I thought Lilly Mullins there, early fourth quarter, did a really good job, had some good baskets,” Mayfield said.
“And I think, too, there was a stretch maybe late first or early second (quarter) when I thought Trinity Curry, to be a freshman (post), came in there and did some good things around the rim, had a couple of put-backs,” he added.
In addition to Curry, two FHS players also scored four: guards Mya Johnston, a senior, and Reagan Sheridan, a freshman.
