Lady Hawks’ ‘Sisters-K’ lead win
HARDIN VALLEY — It was opening night in District 4-4A play Thursday night, Jan. 4, and the “Sisters-K” of Hardin Valley Academy’s girls basketball team stepped up big.
In the Lady Hawks’ 62-42 home win over Maryville, the “Sisters” — Kamryn Butcher, Kyndra West and Kamiyah Love — combined for 48 of the team’s points, more than 77 percent of the total. The victory gave HVA a 9-8 overall record, 1-0 in district, starting this week.
All three members of the sisterhood are juniors.
“They were all huge for us tonight,” HVA head coach Jennifer Galloway said. “I thought Kamryn had the most well-rounded game she’s played.
“Her decision-making was the best it’s ever been when she had the ball.”
The Lady Hawks jumped to a quick 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game and led 16-11 after one.
A 13-8 advantage in the second quarter — 11 by the Sisters — gave HVA a 29-19 halftime lead. The Lady Rebels were still hanging around in the third quarter when Zoee Hamson’s three cut Hardin Valley’s edge to 36-27 with 2:25 left.
From there it was all Lady Hawks.
In the last two minutes of the third, HVA outscored MHS 8-0 — on two free throws by Love and consecutive treys by Butcher — and it was 44-27 after three periods.
Maryville tried to fight back in the fourth — seven in a row cut a 20-point lead to 13 — but the Lady Hawks scored 10 of the final 12 points.
“We have a habit of digging ourselves in a hole, then we have to fight to get out of it,” Lady Red Rebels head coach Taylor Clark said.
Butcher led all scorers with 23. West scored 15 and Love added 10. Hamson was high for Maryville with 11.
“I think we did really good on defense and we moved the ball really well tonight,” Butcher said. “One of our best games so far. We’re getting better each day.”
Nine times the Lady Hawks connected from long range. “We did shoot the ball really well,” Galloway said. “I felt like we were able to capitalize on the stuff we did defensively.”
