Key cogs for Lady Ads at MHS
MARYVILLE — Fighting off a third quarter rally attempt by Maryville, just as Farragut’s Lady Admirals did after the Lady Red Rebels cut a 12-point second-quarter lead to four, Jason Mayfield’s girls remained one of three district teams perfect in 4-4A action starting the week (3-0).
And the Admirals skipper saved the biggest praise for a few of his top performers following a 54-42 victory at MHS Saturday evening, Jan. 27.
About sophomore wing K.J. McNealy (game-high 18 points, including four 3-point baskets), Mayfield told “Voice of the Admirals” Erik Gerhardt (WFIV-FM 105.3), “She’s special, really, really talented. Sky’s the limit for her, but she’s great to have and a great kid, great teammate, great leader.
“I think our players would say that even as a sophomore, she’s one of the more vocal (players) and she’s a captain,” the coach added. “So can’t say enough about her.”
About wing Carly Vining (six points), Mayfield said the senior “knows her role. Stepped out there in the first quarter, made a couple” of three-point baskets. “… Those two in the first quarter right there were big. That’s big confidence builder for her. ... She puts in the work and doesn’t care to play (any) role.”
The key, Mayfield added, was “to really use Carly’s strengths and skills and determination and hustle and all those other things to be really effective. … Another good teammate, another great kid, great family.”
Jaci Neubert, junior guard, scored 15 for the Lady Ads. Junior guard Annie Priest had eight and junior guard Mya Johnston added seven.
Karly Hunt’s 16 points led Maryville (4-17).
