KCHS girls look to repeat

KNOXVILLE — It was a Sydney Mains showcase Friday night, Feb. 23, at home.

In the quarterfinal round of the TSSAA Division II-AA Girls’ Basketball Tournament, the versatile Knoxville Catholic High School senior poured in 30 points in leading the Lady Irish to a 55-37 win over Harpeth Hall School.

KCHS, defending DII-AA state champion, will play Christ Presbyterian Academy in a state semifinal in Cookeville at noon Thursday, Feb. 29.

“Proud of her,” grinned coach/father Travis Mains. “She plays hard all the time.”

After falling behind 8-2 with 3:07 left in the first, Catholic scored the next 14 points — 10 by Mains, which included a three at the first-quarter buzzer — to lead 16-8 with 5:28 left in the half.  “We took over then (after the early deficit),” said Sydney Mains, whose team improved to 26-5. “It didn’t matter who was scoring the ball. We were all scoring it. We were passing the ball really well and playing defense.”

Caroline Kreuger got 10 points for KCHS. Taylor McCall led Harpeth with 11.
