FHS softball, KCHS baseball barely short of state tourney

One area softball team and one local baseball team came up just short of reaching the 2024 Spring Fling in Murfreesboro.

The Farragut Lady Admirals concluded their 2024 campaign with a 5-0 loss to Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett Friday night, May 17, in Northeast Tennessee in the Class 4A State Sectionals.

Farragut managed just four singles as Addison Pressley, Elsa Morrison, Ava Barnes and Amelia Dorset connected for Farragut (26-12).

“There’s a lot to be happy about, and some disappointment that we didn’t get to state,” FHS head coach Nick Green said. “But that’s what comes from competing at the highest level of high school softball and winning two state championships.

“When you step back and look ... we made it and finished in the top 16 (statewide), and that’s good because a lot of other teams didn’t get there, but after you win two championships, it changes your perception of success,” he added.

The Lady Admirals said goodbye to six seniors: Pressley, Hailey Nichols, Anna French, Emma MacTavish, Rilee Kate Ragan and Laney Shrader.

The Knoxville Catholic High School baseball team narrowly missed a chance to defend its 2023 Division II-AA state championship, as it dropped its state quarterfinal series to Christ Presbyterian Academy, 2-1, in Nashville.

The Irish, finishing 22-19, defeated the Lions 4-2 in Game 1 Wednesday, May, 16. Junior Cooper Williamson went 1-for-3 and scored two runs for Catholic. He also pitched a complete game, scattering just two hits over seven innings. He walked three and struck out eight. Hutson Oakes went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In Game 2, Thursday, May 17, the Irish lost 9-6. Williamson had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI. Freshman DJ Lowery had a hit, a run and an RBI, while Oakes finished with two hits and an RBI.

In Game 3, CPA closed out the series with a 12-2 victory. Williamson doubled and scored, while Lowery singled and scored.

“If you’d have told me at the beginning of the season that we would be one game away from the Final Four, I would probably have taken it,” KCHS head coach Caleb Moore said.
