Sgt. Stout ‘gave all,’ March ’70

U.S. Army Sgt. Mitchell W. Stout was among the brave troops during overseas combat to sacrifice his life to save many fellow servicemen, purposely falling on a live grenade to absorb the impact and avoid more casualties during the Vietnam Conflict on March 12, 1970.

A Medal of Honor recipient, this native of Lenoir City is honored in the Town of Farragut: Sgt. Mitchell W. Stout Medal of Honor Memorial Virtue Cemetery is located along Evans Road, just to the west of Virtue Road.

This monument (right) pays tribute, in detail, to Sgt. Stout’s sacrifice, which came to light in a much brighter fashion on Memorial Day, with Farragut and the nation celebrating all heroes who sacrificed their lives in combat.
