Serving up a home-based bartending biz, Cawn finds joy in making lots of drinks

Jennifer Cawn of Farragut is serving up a home-based bartending business, Pour Gal, where she caters to clients at their parties, banquets and other events.

“I’ve been serving (since) high school,” she said about food industry work. “I’ve done a bunch of different jobs, but I’ve always gravitated back toward the food industry, and I just wanted to upgrade from there and do some bartending.

“I really enjoy making drinks, whether they be alcoholic or not — coffee drinks, smoothies,” Cawn added. “I also had completed a mixology school, as well, here in Knoxville to brush up.

“I’m just starting to branch back into it. I’ve been away for a little while. I had my son in September, and I’m expecting another one in December.”

As for starting this business, “I was trying to think of something I could do in my own time, make my own schedule,” Cawn said.

She got her business license Sunday, July 20, and has recertified through the Tennessee Alcohol Beverage Commission.

For Cawn, bartending is a good time to meet people and to serve. Even as a child in school, “I’ve always been kind of a teacher’s pet,” she recalled. “As a little girl, I wanted to help the adults in the kitchen, helping with Thanksgiving and Christmas.”

Even as a youngster, she enjoyed serving non-alcoholic drinks to family members. “My parents used to teach a spin (stationary bicycles) class in Orlando (Florida),” she recalled. “I used to fill everybody’s water bottles so they didn’t have to get off their spin bikes to stay hydrated.

“I guess it’s always been something I’ve done subconsciously,” she added.
