Staving off 3 match points, Lady Ads volleyball edges KCHS
It was a volleyball match that couldn’t have gone down to the wire any further.
Thursday night, Aug. 29, in FHS’s Lynn E. Sexton Gymnasium, Farragut High’s volleyball team outlasted Knoxville Catholic three sets to two. The Lady Ads saved three match points in the fifth set and held on for the dramatic win, ending the week with a 9-1 mark.
“Refusing to lose; refusing to fall down,” FHS head coach Andre Alves said. “I couldn’t be prouder.”
“One more play, here or there, by either team,” KCHS head coach Brent Carter said. “Kudos to them for battling the way they did.”
Farragut built a commanding 21-10 lead in the first set, only to see the Lady Irish cut the lead to 23-17. FHS then closed it out.
Farragut led 11-10 in the second, but Catholic then went on an 11-4 run to lead 21-15. The Irish won it
25-18 to tie the match at a set apiece.
Streaky scoring — so common in volleyball — continued in the third set. Down 18-15, the Lady Admirals ripped off the final 10 points of the set to win 25-18 and lead two sets to one.
Back and forth scoring characterized the fourth set. FHS led 23-22 to pull within two points of the match. Two in a row by Catholic gave them a set point at 24-23.
Farragut tied it at 24, only to lose the next two points and the set. The fifth set would decide the match.
KCHS jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but the Lady Admirals tied it 6-6. The Lady Irish
led 14-11 and had three
set points. Four in a row by Farragut gave them a match point at 15-14.
Catholic tied it at 15 but Farragut then scored the final two points to win the set, and the match, 17-15.
“We were down 14-11 (in the fifth set) and we only gave up one after that,” Alves said. “That shows my leadership of my seniors.”
Trinity Rye led FHS (6-1) in kills with 21. She also led in digs with 15; Bella Ekeler had 13 digs. Ekeler led in assists by far with 41.
Mia Kinney led Catholic
(4-3) in kills with 13. Caroline Calloway had 22

33 assists.
Tuesday, Aug. 27, the Lady Admirals beat Anderson Co. on the road in a three-set sweep: 25-16, 25-23 and 25-18.
