Hawks hang tough, but Halls pulls away late

HARDIN VALLEY — When Hardin Valley Academy quarterback Dylan Umansky hit Michael Stewart Jr. for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 6:01 left in the third quarter, it cut visiting Halls lead to 21-14.

The third quarter ended with that score. Unfortunately for HVA, the fourth period was all Halls, as the Red Devils pulled away with a 15-0 quarter and a 36-14 win.

“We’re youn;, we’ve got a lot of growing up to do,” Hawks head coach Tyler Wynn said. “Our kids gotta learn how to win games. ...”

The Red Devils took a 7-0 lead midway through the first when quarterback Amari Lethgo threw a 30-yard scoring pass to Brody Rogers. The visitors increased it to 14-0 on the first play of the second quarter when Lethgo finished off an 80-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge.

After gaining a mere 51 yards on its first three possessions, the Hawks’ offense finally got untracked when it took over on the Devils 47 with 7:24 left in the first half.

On the ninth play — third and 5 from the HVA 18 — Umansky hit Isaac Shelby for the score, and the Hawks were right back in it, 14-7. Umansky converted a fourth-and 2 on the drive with a 3-yard keeper.

The Red Devils answered right back when Lethgo connected with Landon Vest for a 6-yard TD pass with 49 seconds left in the half.

HVA penalties helped sustain the drive.

The Hawks (1-3) stuffed the Devils’ opening drive of the second half, then cut it to 21-14 when Umansky hit Stewart.
