No job too small for Mr. Handyman

KNOXVILLE — No job is too small or large for Mr. Handyman of West Knoxville, 8081 Kingston Pike Suite 101, in the Downtown West area of Knoxville.

Woman-owned and licensed, the company provides maintenance and repair services for residential and commercial buildings, as well as home improvement projects.

“We do everything from drywall repairs, painting, gutter-cleaning, to things as small as pulling the chains on ceiling fans and remodeling a bathroom,” owner Penny Ellison said.

She noted for people with 20- to 25-foot ceilings, her team has gone to those homes and pulled the ceiling fan chains to change direction of the fans.

“It’s just an array — some people call it the ‘honey-do list of things they’ve been trying to get their husband to do for years,’” Ellison said. “They finally just call us.”

Mr. Handyman serves Farragut and Hardin Valley, as well as Alcoa, Claxton, Karns, Maryville, Powell and Oak Ridge with a team of 25 employees to serve its customers.

While Mr. Handyman’s hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, “we do work longer than that sometimes,” she said.

Ellison started the business with her husband, a veteran, in 2009, but she lost him to cancer in 2019. “I became the owner,” she said. “I think one thing was it kept me going.

“We had always worked as a team, together,” Ellison added. “So, the thing for me was I knew I had employees who were like family, so I knew that they had families to feed.

“I just wanted to try to do whatever I could to keep what we had built going. It seems so strange to me that next month it will be five years.”

In that time, “we’ve done really well,” Ellison said. “He was the one who wanted the business; I just was along for the ride. … I never dreamed that I would have to be the one doing all that.

While “it was hard at times,” Ellison said she would do it all again in a heartbeat.
