Led by twins, Webb girls 1-2-3

HENDERSONVILLE — Your team’s top two runners — finishing as the state meet’s top two — are twins. And then, throw in a non-biological “triplet” who finished third. All three are Webb School of Knoxville juniors whose dominance allowed the Lady Spartans to easily capture the TSSAA Division II-AA State Meet title at Sanders Ferry Park Thursday, Nov. 7.

“We had the fastest three seeds in the field in Carolina Areheart (third at 17:57.36) and the twins, Calysta (Garmer, state champ at 17:46.55) and Jazzlyn (Garmer, runner-up at 17:53,37),” Webb head coach Dan Murray said.

“That can create some real tension because all naturally and rightfully want to win the individual title,” he added.

“I’m proud of the way they worked together to get clear of the field on behalf of the team before settling the individual winner in the last mile. That was the race plan, and they bought in entirely. Calysta was having a great week and a great day and won the title. But as far as I’m concerned, we have three individual champs.”

Cissna, Vargas All-state

Also earning All-state honors where sophomore Emma Cissna (12th) and sophomore Ariana Vargas (15th).

Looking back, “Every member of this squad had the state team championship at the top of their list of goals back in July,” Murray said. “Since then, they’ve put in the work every day in 6 a.m. practices, on weekends and in all weather, to make the dream a reality.

“The bigger the challenge, the more enthusiastic they become,” he added. “Their commitment is total, and the results come from that.”
