25-20 is first FHS flag f’ball win score
Roughly two weeks after taking over as Farragut High School flag football head coach, Cameron York led his Lady Ads to the new program’s first victory.
Getting big plays on both sides of the ball, Farragut (1-2) overcame a 14-13 halftime deficit versus South-Doyle in FHS’s Eddie Courtney Stadium to beat the Lady ’Kees 25-20 Monday night, Nov. 18.
York declared Lady Ads defender Kinley Frear, a sophomore, “Defensive MVP” Monday night. “She had a great couple of plays, man. She’s really coming up. She had a couple of (pass) deflections, really playing her zone well, really was pulling the flags.”
FHS interceptions came from senior Keira Shafer and sophomore Krysten Youlden.
On offense, quarterback Harper Holmes “was throwing bombs today,” York said about the sophomore, who connected on TD passes of 75 and 15 yards to junior receiver Makenzie Hunter.
“She was making great plays down the field,” the coach said about Hunter. “She’s got speed. ... And she was blazing down the field.”
Eleena Ralston, a sophomore runningback, raced 55 yards for a touchdown.
About FHS senior running back Erica Benfield, who had a handful of impressive runs in addition to tossing a pair of key pass completions, “She she was balling,” York said, as Benfield fired a 10-yard TD pass to Ralston while scoring on a 1-point conversion run.
“There was a couple of times when she was running, we asked her to read the defense, throw it or keep it or pitch it back,” he added. “It was almost like having two quarterbacks on the field.”
The Lady Ads grabbed a second win Monday (2-2), beating Career Magnet Academy 21-6.
