Weekly Black History Month events at CUMC

Throughout the month of February, Concord United Methodist Church’s Community Care Night “will provide a lens into the role Christianity has played in the efforts to secure Civil Rights for all,” a CUMC press release stated about its weekly celebration of Black History Month in February.

Each Wednesday evening in February, Concord United provides a free meal and connection from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.. Worship time is held from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and in February will feature messages each week about The Gospel and the Civil Rights Movement, as well as a play (Wednesday), Feb. 19 titled “Walk, Don’t Ride.”

On Feb. 26, “We will conclude the series with a message from (the) Rev. Harold Middlebrook, a pastor and leader during the Civil Rights movement,” the press release stated.

• Feb. 5 – Senior Pastor Wil Cantrell will share “Racism’s Backstory and the Gospel’s True Story.”

• Feb. 12 – Pastor of Discipleship Brooke Hartman will share “The Gospel Within: Dr. Martin Luther King the Preacher”

• Feb. 19 – WordPlayers Theatre Co. will present “Walk, Don’t Ride,” a play by Peter Manos. This presentation of drama and song depicts events that shaped American freedom, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Nashville Lunch Counter Sit-ins and the Greyhound/Trailways Freedom Rides. “Walk, Don’t Ride” ends with a recollection of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous dream and a moving call to keep it alive today.

Feb. 26 – Middlebrook will share his experience as a pastor and leader during the Civil Rights Movement. He was a pastor in Atlanta, Memphis and Knoxville, a leader within the organizations of the Civil Rights movement and a friend of Dr. King who was present when the Civil Rights icon was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel, Memphis, in 1968.

All events and services are free and open to the public. “Wednesday Community Care nights include children’s and student activities, and worship services are always family-friendly,” the release stated. “The play on Feb. 19 is recommended for ages 10 and older. A love offering will be collected that evening to support the theatre group.”

Childcare/kid’s activities will be provided for younger children.

Registration for Feb. 19 play is encouraged and available at ConcordUnited.org/Events.
