State’s #3 Bearden girls outlast Lady Admirals
It was a typical back-and-forth game between longtime rivals into the third quarter until one team pulled away.
In the end, Bearden High School’s girls’ basketball team got the regular-season sweep against Farragut, 54-46, in FHS Lynn E. Sexton Gymnasium Friday night, Feb. 7.
While BHS junior point guard Natalya Hodge led all scorers with 21, the state’s third-ranked Lady Dawgs (25-4 overall, 9-0 in District 4-4A) used defense to force the Lady Ads to rely heavily on the three-ball — but FHS had way too many misses.
“We got some decent looks, but you gotta be able to knock ‘em down,” Jason Mayfield, Farragut head coach, said.
“Our defense did a great job of holding them under 50 points,” Justin Underwood, Lady Bulldogs head coach, said. “I just thought our defense was fantastic.”
Jaci Neubert and Trinity Curry each scored 13 for FHS (19-8, 7-2).
The Lady Ads led 12-11 after one quarter, but a 6-3 Bearden stretch to end the half made it 26-22 Lady Dawgs. An 8-3 FHS run within the first two minutes of the third quarter gave Farraut a 30-29 lead.
But the Lady Dawgs grabbed the momentum right back, outscoring the Lady Ads 14-6 the rest of the quarter to lead 43-36 with eight minutes to go.
That lead grew to 12 before a late Farragut run cut the lead to 48-44 with 1:22 to play.
