Dawgs, #4, hold off late Farragut rally

It was yet another tough and hard-fought basketball game between longtime rivals.

Friday night, Feb. 7, in Lynn E. Sexton Gym, Bearden’s No. 4 state-ranked boys’ team used a late third-quarter run to build a six-point lead against Farragut that it wouldn’t relinquish, prevailing 54-48.“We battled back, we had an opportunity,” FHS head coach JP Burris said. “We just didn’t execute there at the end.”

“Farragut brought a great fight tonight,” BHS head coach Jeremy Parrott said.

When Bearden’s JaMichael Blair hit a lay-up with 6:07 left in the game, it gave the Bulldogs an eight-point lead, 47-39.

But the Ads answered with five straight — a lay-up and a three-point basket by point guard Parker Lane — to make it 47-44 with 3:14 left. Bryce Howard hit two free throws, cutting it one at 49-48 with 50 seconds left.

They wouldn’t score again.

FHS senior forward Dom VanAcker scored a game-high 23. Junior point guard Justin Nordin led Bearden with 15 points, while Blair got 11 for the Dawgs (24-4 overall, 8-1 in District 4-4A starting the week). King Hubbard added 10.

Lane scored 13 for FHS (16-11, 3-6 to start the week).
