Webb teams looking for Division II-AA state crowns
KNOXVILLE — Looking to make the Tennesssee Secondar School Athletic Association Divison II-AA Basketball Tournament a Webb School of Knoxville sweep is hardly far-fetched.
Both the Webb Lady Spartans, dominant for most of the 2024-25 season with a 27-3 record under second year head coach Greg Hernandez, and Ricky Norris’ boys team — every bit as dominant with a 32-2 record, look to close the deal and add to this private school’s Knox County-leading haul of team state championship victories.
While the Webb girls have captured six state crowns — all under former head coach Shelley Collier — Norris is seeking his program’s second.
On top of everything else is the collective opinions of Tennessee Sports Writers Associaiton, which has had both teams ranked No. 1 statewide for a majority of the season.
Both Webb teams enter the “Final Four” of state-best teams in Tennessee Tech’s Hooper Eblen Center beginning Friday, March 7: Norris’ Spartans take on Ensworth (20-11) in a semifinal, which is set to begin at 6 p.m. EST, 5 p.m. CST, while Henandez’s Lady Spartans square off against power Lipscomb Academy (27-3) starting at 4:30 p.m., EST, Friday.
A girls victory allows Webb to play the winner of rival Knox Catholic (19-15) or CPA (22-6) starting at 5 p.m., EST, Saturday, March, 8, for the state championship.
A Webb boys semifinal victory also would vault these West Knoxville boys into a state title showdown against the winner of MBA (24-6) versus Briarcrest (25-4). Opening tip is 7:30 p.m. EST, March 8.
