Pitching key as Ads start 5-1, beat Lebanon
It was a masterful pitching duo for Farragut High School’s baseball team Monday night, March 10, at FHS’s John Heatherly Field.
After a shaky first inning against visiting Lebanon, starting pitcher Brody Roberts was perfect for the next three. Reliever Joey Ray came on in the fifth inning, then gave up a run in the seventh — but only due to errors.
The result was a 5-2 win for the Admirals that improved their record to 5-1.
“I think they did a great job,” Ads skipper Garrett Copeland said of his hurlers. “Brody started nicely and did a good job and Joey just competes in the strike zone. That’s what we expect out of them.”
Roberts gave up one run on two hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out three. Ray pitched the final three innings, striking out one while giving up an unearned run on one hit.
“Hard to find it sometimes,” Roberts said about the first inning. “When you settle down you trust your defense. I started trusting my fastball. ...”
The LHS first-inning run came on a walk and a pair of singles. But Roberts struck out the next two, ending the inning.
It took Farragut all of two batters to tie the game in the first. Shortstop Braden Humphrey led off with a double and scored on third baseman Owen Stelzer’s double. Stelzer went to third on a grounder, then scored on first baseman Travis Brummitt’s sac fly.
FHS added a run in the second when designated hitter Cole Creasman led off with a walk, went to second on a balk, then scored on a pair of grounders.
Brummitt turned a double play to end a Blue Devils threat in the sixth inning.
Farragut added two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame. Brummitt led off by lacing a double to right-center. Pinch runner Eli Tittle went to third on a passed ball, then scored on center-fielder Zane Kureshi-Smith’s single.
Kureshi-Smith then stole second and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
