Farragut, HVA, Webb among Scholars’ Bowl teams still alive on PBS

KNOXVILLE — With dozens of East Tennessee high school teams eliminated, Tennessee Scholars Bowl 2025 is ready to head into its Education Eight round of competition.

Competitions can be seen starting at 5:30 p.m. the following days on PBS (WEPT-TV (Channel 2) and WKOP-TV (Channel 15),

The “Smart 16 matchups began with Farragut High School, competing against Corbin, Kentucky, Thursday, March 13. Farragut defeated the Kentucky team, 580-365.

Others included Kingston defeating Happy Valley Monday, March 17; Jefferson County winning versus Morristown East Thursday, March 20; Hardin Valley Academy beating South Greene Friday, March 21; and Halls defeating Temple Academy Monday, March 24.

The Education Eight competitions begin Wednesday, March 26, with a matchup between Farragut and Kingston.

One of the two Hardin Valley Academy teams will compete against one of the two Webb teams Thursday, March 27; L&N STEM Academy will square off against Jefferson County Friday, March 28; and Halls will take on Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett Monday, March 29.

Following the Educated Eight round, the teams will be narrowed down to the Philosophical 4, which begins airing Tuesday, April 1. The championship showdown will air Thursday, April 3.

This is the 41st season of Scholar’s Bowl.

According to a press release, public, private, parochial schools and homeschool students compete in Tennessee Scholars’ Bowl, which started airing early round competitions Jan. 13.

Tennessee counties represented in the 2025 tournament have been, in addition to Knox, Anderson, Blount, Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Jefferson, Loudon, McMinn, Monroe, Roane, Scott, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington. Several schools sent two teams to the tournament. 

The format? “Teams of four students answer questions in literature, language, science, art, math, geography, music, sports, history, religion, current events and other subjects,” the press release stated. “Each game is a single elimination match. Winning teams advance to rounds of 32, 16, eight and four before the final two teams compete for the Frank Miller Memorial Trophy and a $1,000 cash stipend in the championship game.”
