Rally vs HVA gives Dawgs 4-4A Tournament #1 seed
BEARDEN — A walk-off comeback victory in a rivalry showdown netted Bearden High School baseball at least a share of the regular-season District 4-4A championship.
The Bulldogs overcame an early deficit to topple Hardin Valley Academy 5-4 at BHS’s Phil Garner Ballpark Monday evening, April 21. The Hawks fell to 18-9 overall, 6-3 in district.
Bearden (26-6 overall, 8-2 in district) faced a 4-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh innings. But the Bulldogs captured a walk-off victory when Matt Schroeffel, a senior first baseman, ended the game with a walk-off single, which combined with a Hawks’ error brought home the tying and game-winning runs.
The Bulldogs will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 4-4A Tournament.
The victory culminated a busy late-season stretch for Bearden, which began with a 6-5 victory over longtime rival Farragut at FHS Monday, March 14. The Bulldogs also claimed an 11-1 victory versus Karns to celebrate BHS Senior Night Thursday, April 17. Coach Dave Prichard’s boys now have won 11 of their last 12 games.
“The win (over Farragut) was a big one for us,” Prichard said.
