Dominant in sprints, distance runs gives Webb girls repeat as Div II-AA state #1
MURFREESBORO — The Webb School of Knoxville girls track & field team may be building a dynasty in Division II-AA, winning its second consecutive state crown Wednesday, May 21, at Middle Tennessee State University.
The Lady Spartans, winning state by 43 points (130), displayed a balance of power in both sprints and distance running, with more points coming in the field jumping events.
Freshmen Lacy Young and Simone Romain captured first and third, respectively, in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Young was champ in the 100 (11.79) and 200 (24.97), with Romain third in 100 (12.12) and 200 (25.53).
Junior Carolina Areheart grabbed the 800 run state title (2:09.43), with junior teammate Calysta Garmer fourth (2:18.92) and her sister, junior Jazzlyn Garmer, sixth.
Calysta and Jazzlyn were a close champ and runner-up in the two longest individual runs, respectively, the 1600 and 3200 run. Calysta was first in the 1600 (4:49.41) and 3200 (10:31.20) and Jazzlyn second in 1600 (4:51.32) and just .15 of a second behind her sister in the 3200 (10:31.35).
Webb’s 4 X 200 relay team took second behind rival Knoxville Catholic (1:41.92), with the Lady Spartans foursome just .15 behind the first-place Lay Irish (1:42.07).
The eventual state champ’s 4 X 800 relay was yet another first-place showing (9:39.72).
Webb senior Lennox Langham grabbed the triple jump state crown (40-feet-2) and claimed second in long jump (18-feet-7).
In high jump, Lady Spartans junior Tallulah Carney claimed third (5-feet-4).
