Farragut receives Tennessee Municipal League Innovation Award

The Town of Farragut recently received an Excellence in Innovation Award from

Tennessee Municipal League during the organization’s annual meeting this month in recognition for the Town’s Advanced Traffic Management System.

“Farragut’s ATMS project was completed in spring of 2025,” a Town press release stated. “The goal was to address traffic issues resulting from a growth in population both inside and outside of town.

“Town leaders knew that

by managing traffic signals, they could better control congestion and the resulting air quality issues from idling vehicles,” it stated. “The ATMS project began in 2016 when Farragut’s Engineering Department applied for and received a Congestion Mitigation Air Quality grant through the Tennessee Department of Transportation.”

Funding from the grant was used to install the ATMS on the Town’s 26 traffic signals.

“Extensive research into traffic patterns turned into timing plans for each signal, allowing for the most efficient traffic flow,” the press release further stated. “The system also provides centralized control over each signal, meaning the Engineering Department can override a scheduled plan if needed.

“Major intersections are monitored from cameras at Town Hall so that problems can be quickly spotted and

corrected,” it stated. “Since the project has been completed, officials have received positive feedback from motorists, and data shows that travel times have improved.”

“Traffic has been the biggest source of complaints I’ve

received for the past few years,” Farragut Mayor Ron Williams said. “The ATMS

has successfully improved travel times, especially on the Kingston Pike corridor.
