Farragut Intermediate School earns Governor’s Civic Seal
Farragut Intermediate School accepted the Governor’s Civics Seal for its efforts in teaching civics to its students at FIS, Monday, Aug. 25.
This is the second year the school has earned the seal, according to FIS principal Suzanne George Parham.
“The Tennessee Governor’s Civics Seal is an award recognizing Tennessee schools and districts that prioritize civics education,” Parham said. “It signifies that a school or district has met specific criteria demonstrating a strong commitment to teaching students about the nation’s and state’s history and civics values.
“It takes us a full school year, and it is an intradisciplinary effort to accomplish this goal,” she added.
“Last year, eight schools received the Governor’s Civics Seal,” Knox County Social Studies superintendent Katherine Schultz said. “This year, there are 13 schools.”
“Recognizing the importance of civics values and education, Gov. Bill Lee has announced the ‘Governor’s Civics Seal’ during his first State of the State address on March 4, 2019,” a the state Department of Education website stated. “Additionally, the Tennessee General Assembly passed HB0944/SB0800, which amended T.C.A. § 49-6-1018 to officially establish the ‘Governor’s Civics Seal.’”
In 2020, the state Board of Education amended SBE
Rule 0520-01-03-.07 to further outline the requirements for districts and schools to earn the seal.
