Record enthusiasts’ nirvana
Hi-Fi and Fly celebrates its opening

Michael and Dawn Sayne, along with their daughter, Heather, all of Farragut, opened their vintage records, clothing and home decor shop, Hi-Fi and Fly, July 24 at 11422 Kingston Pike, Suite A. They celebrated with a Farragut West Knox Chamber of Commerce-sponsored ribbon cutting Wednesday, Aug. 27.
“Here at Hi-Fi and Fly, it’s all about vinyl, vintage and vibes,” FWKCC president/CEO Julie Blaylock said.
“We’re really excited to get to provide a ribbon cutting for this brand new business in the Town of Farragut. We are so excited you are here.”
“As always, we’re happy to have a new business, and this one looks like it’s going to be very interesting,” Farragut Mayor Ron Williams said. “There’s always a need, and I think it will fit really well, plus it produces sales tax.”
Michael said he and Dawn have talked about and have tried opening the shop for years.
“For a long time we were looking at places that we thought it had to be, which was where all of them are, which is downtown or that area,” he said. However, “we live minutes from here, in Farragut, and thought one day, ‘why does it have to be anywhere but Farragut?’ In fact, it makes more sense that it is in Farragut because what we’ve heard the most of in the last five or six weeks of being open is ‘I’m so glad I don’t have to drive 30 minutes to the nearest record store.’
“I felt like (the Farragut location) was a great spot to open a record shop,” Michael added. “From the time we met, we’ve loved vintage and shopped for vintage and shopped for vinyl.
“We’ve done this in little booths at antique malls, but we really wanted to do this on our own and start something that would be ours,” he said.
Since the shop’s opening, “it’s gone great so far,” Michael said. “I think the favorite part is the people who have come in … just talk about music all day and be friendly with folks.”
In a separate interview, Dawn said, “My husband and I started out just kind of thrifting together and going to music events and stuff. It was something we liked doing as a pastime. Then we started collecting things and collecting more and more things.”
Then, they decided to sell some of their collections.
“We went to some local monthly markets, where we would sell some of the stuff we had and did really well with that,” she said. “And, it kind of just snowballed.”
Heather said the shop’s catch phrase is “vintage, vinyl and vibes.”
“It’s more of a record store than anything,” she said. “Also, it’s a place to come and maybe find some things they like and want to take home with them.
“There’re just so many random things that everyone can resonate with something,” Heather said.
“We like to keep it new and exciting so it’s somewhere you can think, ‘Maybe I didn’t find something today but next time …” Dawn added.
Along with vintage vinyls and other merchandise, the shop has an alcove where the Saynes will be hosting upcoming jam sessions and concerts.
The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday; from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday; and closed Monday. Check out their Facebook page or call 865-214-1054 for updates.
